Knob and Tube Wiring

In today’s modern era knob and tube wiring is viewed as being very hazardous because the wires aren’t grounded and the circuits provide lower amperage than is required at present. These wires promote insulation which break down over time. Moreover, due to this problem, most insurance companies decline to insure buildings with the knob and tube wiring.

Knob and tube wiring was considered an electrical trend and most homes built before the year 1950 were wired based on this standard.  You will be in need of an upgrade if your home was built in the early 1900’s and has never been rewired since.  The rewiring of your home may be an expensive undertaking but will also aid in the safety of your home and family.

Illegal Splices

A splice is an association between two or more wires. In addition, it is illegal and very hazardous if not kept in a junction box. A splice is only legal for temporary lightning and circuit troubleshooting.

If a splice is essential, then an electrician should be hired to launch a junction box.  Having these electrical violations laying around your home can be very costly in the end.

New Lights Installed onto Old Wiring

Old wiring can suffer tremendously from advanced light fixtures.  This is because old wiring is more susceptible to an overload.  At present, lights are created with wires that can endure 90°C whereas the older wires can endure just 60°C.

It is vital to check the age of wiring and in order to do that you must look for the date stamp on the insulation jacket. If your home was wired prior to 1987, then a splice box should be installed and approximately three feet of new wiring for the new light fixture and the same to old wiring. This would prohibit you from having to rewire the entire circuit.  It is beneficial to note that wires produced after 1987 have a date and those made before 1987 do not have a date.
